Vol. 8 No. 14

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - RECIPROCAL TRADE BETWEEN SAORSTÁT AND UNITED STATES.

SEAN MAC GIOLLA 'N RIOGH

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state what steps have been taken, if any, to arrange for a reciprocal trade agreement between the Saorstát and the United States of America, by which the American tariff on textiles and other Irish exports might be modified, in return for a modification of the tariff on certain American imports into the Saorstát.

The whole field of our commercial relations with the United States is being thoroughly explored with a view to considering the arrangements to be made when our plenipotentiary definitely takes up his duties.

Arising out of that answer, would the Minister inform us what will be the duration of this period of exploration, even approximately?

The suggestion is that that period should be from now until the time the Minister plenipotentiary takes up his duties. I expect that will be in about a fortnight.
