Vol. 8 No. 14

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CLOSING OF BULL WALL.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the gate at the entrance to the Bull Wall and strand at Dollymount is closed except to pedestrians; whether he is aware that this is the only strand available to the people of North Dublin, and it is a great hardship to the residents who wish to bring children to the Strand in perambulators and go-cars, and whether steps will be taken to have this hardship removed.

Before replying to this question I beg leave to state that I am not at all clear that I have any responsibility in this matter, and any information I have got I have obtained simply through the courtesy of the Port and Docks Board.

I have made enquiries in this matter from the Port and Docks Board. The position is that the gate referred to in the Deputy's question is always closed to vehicular traffic, as hawkers and the like were in the habit of using the Bull Wall for commercial purposes, and complaints were also received that motorists were observed to proceed along the Wall at a speed endangering the safety of the public. It has been brought to the notice of the Port and Docks Board that the pedestrian entrance is too narrow to allow residents to bring in children's cars, and I am informed that the necessary alterations have now been made at this entrance.

I am quite satisfied.

Is the Minister aware that it would endanger the safety of a motor car to go at even a reasonable speed along the Bull Wall?

This question should not have appeared on the Order Paper, as it does not appear to be within the jurisdiction of the Minister.
