Vol. 8 No. 14

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TULLOW DEPENDENT'S ALLOWANCE.

asked the Minister for Defence whether it is now intended to reconsider the application for dependents' allowance from Mrs. Annie Nolan, Paulville, Tullow, in respect of her son, Volunteer Patrick Nolan, No. 000774, in view of the fact that this woman was receiving over 15s. per week from her son before he joined the National Army.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given to his previous question regarding the case on the 14th December, 1923. It was ascertained after due investigation that prior to enlistment Patrick Nolan contributed about 6/- per week towards the unkeep of the home. The minimum net contribution to warrant the issue of an allowance was 12/- per week. The regulations assumed that an unmarried soldier would contribute at least one-third of his Army pay towards the support of his dependents. In Mr. Nolan's case that would have been about 8/- per week.

In the circumstances I regret that the decision to disallow the claim must be maintained.
