Vol. 8 No. 18

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CUSTOMS SEARCHERS AT DUN LAOGHAIRE.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state how many Customs searchers are employed on the Pier at Dun Laoghaire, and whether he has considered the desirability of increasing their numbers at holiday times.

The Customs preventive staff normally employed at Dun Laoghaire consists of a preventive officer and eight men. This staff has been increased by two since the 12th instant to enable the present holiday traffic to be dealt with expeditiously.

Do the eight men include the two men who were employed checking the luggage and seeing that it has been passed, and are there only six men for searching purposes? In view of the fact that there are now eight men available for searching purposes, does the President consider that number sufficient to search the luggage of 1,000 passengers?

I cannot say whether the eight men include the two men mentioned by the Deputy, but I intend to have an inspection of this particular service very soon and to see whether it is necessary to supplement the staff.

The matter is urgent.

I will not delay having the inspection made.
