Vol. 8 No. 19

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - DEVELOPMENT OF GALWAY PORT.

asked the President whether the Government have yet considered the demands for the opening of Galway as a port of call for ocean-going steamers, and if he will consult the shipping authorities on the matter.

The Government have given consideration to this subject on more than one occasion; it has, also, been carefully explored by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce. As the Deputy is aware, a scheme of this kind cannot be undertaken, with any prospect of success, except in cooperation with the British, United States, and Canadian authorities. The subject was raised by the Saorstát representative at the recent Imperial Economic Conference, and the present position, from the British point of view, was explained by the then First Lord of the Admiralty. If the Deputy will refer to pages 323, 328, and 329 of the Official Record of Proceedings of the Conference he will realise the impossibility of successfully pursuing the project at present.
