Vol. 8 No. 19

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. [ORAL ANSWERS.] - COMPENSATION OF OFFICERS' DEPENDENTS.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that Lieutenant Hanrahan, 2nd Battalion, Limerick City Brigade, was mortally wounded in action on October 17th, 1922, and whether any compensation has been paid to his parents, who were entirely dependent upon him for support, and if he will reconsider the case with a view to compensating adequately his parents for their great loss.

I am aware of the circumstances in which Lieutenant Hanrahan met his death. He was not mortally wounded in action, but was mortally wounded by being fired at whilst walking along Roxborough Road, Limerick, in the company of a lady friend. As his parents had not been wholly dependent on him, they are not entitled to a pension under the Military Service Pensions Act. Dependents' allowance at the rate of 14/- a week was, however, paid to them up to the 23rd February pending an award under the Army Pensions Act. The award was £20. As suggested by the Deputy, I will review the case as favourably as possible with a view to increasing that award.
