Vol. 8 No. 22

THE ADJOURNMENT.

I move the adjournment until 3 o'clock on the 21st October, and I should say that if this measure should pass in another place earlier than the 21st October I would ask the Ceann Comhairle to summon the Dáil at an earlier date. I take it that there would then be no opposition to this Bill passing without delay, but the Dáil would only meet for that business.

Perhaps the President would now make the announcement we were promised some time ago as to the Ministerial appointments, or perhaps it will not be possible to make this announcement now, inasmuch as he would require to have the consent of the Dáil, and that would require a notice of motion. But he promised to make an announcement with regard to the Ministry of Defence, and there was also a promise regarding a Committee for the Ordnance Survey Inquiry. I think that we should have some statement in regard to these two matters before we adjourn.

I would like to add my support to what Deputy Johnson has said, because I think I was a party to the promise that the President gave us to announce the name of the Chairman of the Committee.

I would be able to give the names of the Committee within a few days, I should say before the end of the week. I do not suppose it would be necessary to come back for that, but I would undertake to see Deputy McGarry, and to acquaint him with the names before the end of the week. As regards the other appointment, I regret—nobody regrets it more than I do—that I am not able to make a nomination.

This is like the Boundary Commission. We are always going to do it. The President promised to give it at the last meeting of the Dáil. I did not press him for it, because he was busy, but I do think that in view of the fact that a fire has taken place in the Ordnance Survey we should have some announcement from him to-night.

This is the first notice I have got of the fire, and I should say that I overlooked the matter and absolutely forgot it. We had reached partial agreement upon the names, but we have not yet, so far as I know, communicated with some of the persons named. I believe the names will give satisfaction, even to Deputy McGarry, who is a rather difficult person to please.

The Dáil adjourned at 10.15 p.m.
