Vol. 8 No. 23

DÁIL RESUMES. - ORDER OF BUSINESS.

I move the adjournment. We have taken up a day to-day, and I propose to take that day off next week, and that we adjourn to the 22nd. Deputy Johnson asked me what the course of business would be. There will be the Intoxicating Liquor Bill, the Oireachtas Witnesses Oaths Bill and the Private Bills Costs Bill. A discussion was requested on the Estimate of the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, and if a motion were tabled on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday we would give facilities for its discussion on one of these days.

Can the Minister say what is the intention of the Government with regard to the Local Government Bill? I think the House was under the impression that probably the Minister would have a new Bill to bring forward, and before we begin to table amendments it would be well to know what the intention of the Ministry is in that matter, whether we should proceed on the assumption that the present Bill, as it has passed the Second Reading, is to be taken as the basis of amendments, and when the Committee Stage is likely to begin. I hope the Minister will give us plenty of time, because there is a great deal to be said on that measure.

It is not proposed to take it next week. Some statement appeared in the Independent to the effect that this was one of the matters discussed in the Cabinet. Its information on that is about as reliable as it is on other matters. It was not. Of the matters that the Independent said were discussed not one was discussed.

Might I ask the President if his statement in connection with housing made at a meeting this week is to be taken as official.

No, I got the information from the Ministry of Finance before I made that statement, so that that is all right. The Bill is at present before the Ministry of Finance and will probably be introduced the following week.

That was what I wanted to know; would it be introduced quickly.

The Dáil adjourned at 7 p.m., until 3 o'clock on October 22nd.
