Vol. 9 No. 2

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - COMPENSATION FOR INJURIES.

asked the Minister for Defence whether he is aware that Mr. Thomas Murray, Bluebell, Naas, Co. Kildare, has not yet been paid compensation in respect of injuries sustained by his daughters, Dinah and Mollie, through a collision with a military lorry at Bluebell on the 17th April last, and whether, seeing that Mr. Murray is not able to provide suitable nourishment for his children owing to his being unemployed, he will give instructions to expedite payment.

As I informed the Deputy in answer to a previous question of his shortly after the accident, no legal liability attaches to the Commissioners of Public Works in this matter. The regrettable occurrence was fully investigated by a jury which returned a verdict of unavoidable accident and exonerated the driver of the lorry from blame.

The Commissioners are, however, willing to meet all reasonable medical charges and also as soon as they are aware of the amount of the latter, to consider the question of an ex-gratia payment to the parents of the children. The solicitor acting for the parents has been informed to this effect.
