Vol. 9 No. 3

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DAMAGE CAUSED BY BARROW FLOODS.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if his attention has been called to the serious deterioration of land within the area subject to periodic flooding by the River Barrow; whether as a consequence of such flooding the valuation fixed in former years for tax collection purposes, and at a time when the flooding was not at all so widespread, is out of all proportion to the true value, and if he is prepared to introduce legislation by which valuations may be fixed on a more equitable basis.

I will answer this question which has been put to the Minister for Local Government and Public Health. As it is intended to undertake measures to prevent periodic flooding in the Barrow area, I do not propose to introduce legislation on the lines suggested by the Deputy.

Arising out of the answer, does not the Minister admit it is manifestly unjust to exact taxes?

Yes, we intend to remedy it, though, by dealing with the flooding.

In the near future?
