Vol. 9 No. 6

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - LOUGHREA SANITATION.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that many complaints have been made regarding the unsanitary condition of the town of Loughrea, and, if so, if he will state what steps (if any) have been taken, or were proposed to be taken, by local public bodies or by his Department to remedy this unsatisfactory state of affairs by the provision of an adequate sewerage scheme or otherwise.

No complaints in a general or technical sense have been received, but the defective sewerage arrangements have frequently been indicated by the Medical Officer of Health as contributory to the prevalence of infectious disease.

As regards the second part of the question, I would refer the Deputy to my reply to him on the subject of the 17th July last. On that date the matter was also under consideration by the Loughrea Rural District Council, and the following order was then made:—

"Ask local Labour Organisation to again consider the question of the wages for which they are prepared to carry out the sewerage scheme, and inform them that unless they agree to a reduction in wages to a figure to be approved of by the Council and the Ministry, the carrying out of the proposed works must be indefinitely postponed."

I am not aware as to whether any further steps were taken by the Rural District Council.
