Vol. 9 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DUBLIN POLICE ORDER-SHOPKEEPER'S COMPLAINT.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that within the past few days orders have been given to a large number of shopkeepers residing on the North side of Dublin to remove from outside their doors goods displayed for sale; that in many of these cases a right exists to display goods outside the business premises, and that the new orders will cause a serious depreciation in the value of the premises for business purposes and will hamper the efforts of shopkeepers to remain in business, and if he will see that these restrictions are withdrawn.

replying: I am aware that recently efforts have been made by the Dublin Metropolitan Police to enforce the provisions of Section 17, sub-section (7) of the Dublin Police Act, 1842, which prohibits the exposure for sale of goods upon a carriageway or footway. I am further aware that in any cases in which the police enforced these provisions no right existed to display goods for sale on the footway or carriageway, and that the orders for removal so far from being new are simply an enforcement of the law which has been in existence for the past eighty years and which recently some shopkeepers have disregarded.
