Vol. 9 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - KNOCKBOY (CO. CORK) COMPENSATION AWARD.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state on what basis the award of compensation was granted to the relatives of the late Patrick Byrne, of Knockboy, Carrignavar, Co. Cork; if he will state whether this man was shot owing to his loyalty to the State, and if he will have the case reconsidered with a view to increasing the amount granted, which is considered inadequate by his relatives.

The application referred to by the Deputy was carefully considered by the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee, who were of opinion that the applicant was not dependent to any extent upon the deceased. The amount recommended (£50) was considered sufficient to cover all expenses incurred. In view of the representations which were made as to the inadequacy of the grant, the case was referred back to the Committee for reconsideration. The Committee have reviewed all the facts of the case, but having regard to their terms of reference, they are unable to alter their original decision. I agree with the finding of the Committee.
