Vol. 9 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - CARRIGNAVAR (CORK) COMPENSATION AWARD.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state on what basis compensation was awarded to the relatives of Daniel Hanlon, Ballinamoderee, Carrignavar, who was shot, apparently, owing to the support he gave to the State; if he considers the compensation which was awarded adequate in the circumstances, and if he will have the case reconsidered with a view to increasing the amount granted.

The answer is the same, in all respects, as the previous one.

The application referred to by the Deputy was carefully considered by the Compensation (Personal Injuries) Committee, who were of opinion that the applicants were not dependent to any extent upon the deceased. The amount recommended (£50) was considered sufficient to cover all expenses incurred. In view of the representations which were made as to the inadequacy of the grant, the case was referred back to the Committee for reconsideration. The Committee have reviewed all the facts of the case, but having regard to their terms of reference they are unable to alter their original decision. I agree with the finding of the Committee.
