CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DAIL CIRCUIT COURT REGISTRARS.

asked the Minister for Justice if he can state the number of Registrars of the Dáil Circuit Courts for whom employment has been found in connection with the existing Courts or otherwise, and if he will say whether any steps have been taken, or are in contemplation, to compensate those for whom employment has not been provided and who became unemployed as a result of the closing of the Dáil Courts.

I think that this question is possibly based on some misapprehension as to the facts. The Registrars of Dáil Circuit Courts were usually junior barristers who came down from Dublin from time to time with the Judges of the Dáil Supreme Court.

The holder of such a post, even in the British Courts in this country, was regarded as a part-time, non-pensionable officer, and this applies even more strongly to the Dáil Courts. These professional gentlemen did not rely upon this part-time employment for their living, and they did not become unemployed when the Dáil Courts ceased to function.

In these circumstances, I do not think that the question of compensation or re-employment arises.

The only class of Dáil Court officers who had a reasonable claim in this connection were the Registrars of the District Court, of whom almost all who gave their allegiance to the Saorstát Government have been re-employed.

I think that the Deputy who put the question meant District Registrars.

I have referred briefly to them in the last portion of the answer.
