Vol. 9 No. 11

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - SOLDIERS' DEATHS IN RECENT HOSTILITIES—COMPENSATION CLAIMS.

LIAM MAC SIOGHUIRD

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that great dissatisfaction prevails regarding the inadequacy of the compensation awarded to relatives of members of the National Army who died during the recent hostilitites, either in action or from injuries received in the campaign, and whether, considering the small number involved, it would not be advisable to reconsider these awards with a view to a more adequate scale being fixed.

I am aware that certain awards made under the Army Pensions Act, 1923, are considered inadequate. The provisions of that Act have therefore been reviewed in the light of the experience gained during its administration. As a result, I hope very shortly to ask leave for the introduction of an Amending Bill. Its proposals, if enacted, will make the Deputy's suggestion a practicable one.
