WRITTEN ANSWERS. - D.M.P. PRE-WAR PENSIONERS.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what provisions are being made for the old pre-war pensioners of the Dublin Metropolitan Police, having regard to the fact that it was announced in the House of Commons by the Financial Secretary to the British Treasury that the pre-war pensioners of the D.M.P. would not be included in the benefits of the Pensions (Increase) Act, 1924, in consequence of the D.M.P. Department having been handed over to the Saorstát Government, and, if so, whether the Government of the Saorstát will take steps to ensure that the pensions of those pre-war pensioners will be increased commensurate with increases given to the R.I.C. pre-war pensioners and the pre-war pensions of other Departments of the State handed over to the Saorstát Government; also, if he will state by what authority were the pre-war pensioners of the D.M.P. so handed over without their knowledge or consent, and when did such transfer take place.

As the cost of any increases granted by the British Government under their Pensions (Increase) Act, 1924, is borne entirely out of British funds I regret that I cannot, as suggested by the Deputy, take any steps to ensure that the pre-war Dublin Metropolitan Police pensioners will be granted increases under that Act, but the pensioners themselves are free to make any representation they may desire direct to the British Government. It is not proposed to legislate for similar increases in the case of pensions paid by the Saorstát Government.

In regard to the last part of the question, the pensions in question, being a part of the Dublin Metropolitan Police Service, were transferred to the Government of the Saorstát under Clause 10 (ii) of the Transfer of Functions Order of the 1st April, 1922.
