Vol. 9 No. 25

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ADMINISTRATION OF OLD AGE PENSIONS ACT—APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEE.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state what steps have been taken to set up the Committee to inquire into the system and administration of the Old Age Pensions Act, 1924; what are the terms of reference which are to be submitted to this Committee of Inquiry, or if same are yet available; and if he will see that immediate action is taken to expedite the setting up of this Committee.

The terms of reference for this Committee have now been settled, and are as follows:—

"To consider and report what alterations, if any, should be made in the provisions of the Acts (including regulations made thereunder) relating to Old Age Pensions and Pensions for the Blind respecting the machinery for the determination of claims, questions and appeals, regard being had especially to the desirability of the just and expeditious treatment of all applications."

A suitable chairman with legal qualifications is at present being sought, and it is hoped within a few days to complete the remaining membership of the Committee.

Would it be possible to have the names of the members of the Committee made known to the Dáil before the adjournment?

I will try to have that done. I could have them before the Dáil adjourns on the day when we will be assembled to deal with business from the Seanad——

What are the Minister's intentions regarding the personnel of the Committee, apart from their names?

It is intended to have on the Committee a number of Deputies; then we shall endeavour to get suitable persons, such as chairmen of Pension Committees and some other outside people, together with a certain number of officials.
