Vol. 10 No. 10

CEISTEANNA.—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TELEGRAPH AND TELEPHONE FACILITIES.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that it would be a great convenience to private subscribers to the telephone and an economy to the postal service if the call office was in all cases at the local post office so that telegrams could be sent and delivered through their private telephones, and if he is prepared to consider the suggestion.

I presume that the Deputy refers to a telephone exchange and not a call office only. It is the policy of the Department to place the Exchange at the local post office when the latter is centrally situated and affords suitable accommodation for the purpose. Existing Exchanges situated in other premises are transferred to post offices when opportunity offers. Even when an Exchange is not at the post office subscribers can telephone messages for onward transmission as telegrams and have their telegrams delivered by telephone.
