Vol. 12 No. 6

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ALLEGATIONS AGAINST GOVERNMENT ASSESSOR.

SEAN O DUINNIN

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that it is alleged that a Government assessor or engineer refused to produce the plans or photograph of a burned house during the hearing of a compensation claim in June, 1924, at Fermoy, before the Recorder of Cork; that it is further alleged that the same assessor, some months ago, lost papers or documents in Cork; and whether, in view of these allegations, it is intended to retain this official as a Government assessor.

I am unable to investigate charges of this kind in the absence of details. If the Deputy will give me particulars of the claim referred to in the first part of his question, and of the subject matter of the documents referred to in the second part, I will have inquiries made and will communicate with him.

I wish to ask the Minister as a supplementary question whether he is aware that this Mr. Osborne gave false or prejudiced evidence, namely, that houses, as building material had fallen, could, on June 16th, be built for 25 per cent. less than two months previously to the detriment of the claimant? I wish to know what grounds the Minister had for stating last September in my absence that I wanted to have my case heard under a different Act from the 1923 Act. I did not. I only wanted fair play.

If the Deputy is referring to his own case, he was advised that he could appeal. He did not appeal, and as far as I am concerned I am tired of this case and I will have nothing more to do with it.

The President told me that it would be better for me not to appeal.

That is not a supplementary question.

The Minister told me that he would consider my case.
