Vol. 13 No. 1

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - PRICE OF BREAD.

asked the President whether he is aware that the 4lb. loaf is being retailed all over the Saorstát at eleven pence and one shilling; that the price of flour in the open market has been falling for some months and is now selling as low as 45/- per sack of 280 lbs.; whether as there is little or no evidence so far of any appreciable effort to reduce the cost of bread to the consumer he will take powers to issue an order on behalf of the Executive Council regulating, under penalty, the price of this loaf at 8d., the present price in Britain; and whether he is aware that costings are practically the same in both countries.

The Department of Industry and Commerce is enquiring into the facts bearing on the present retail price of bread, and the Minister for Industry and Commerce will consider the situation immediately on his return.
