Vol. 13 No. 9

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - COMMUNICATION WITH TUSKAR LIGHTHOUSE.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is yet in a position to state when proper communication will be established between Tuskar Lighthouse and the mainland.

I have to refer the Deputy to my answer to his question of the 20th May last in which I pointed out that the onus of providing a means of communication between the Tuskar Rock Lighthouse and the mainland does not rest with my Department.

I have learned that a further attempt was made in June last by a British cable ship to effect the repair of the Tuskar Rock submarine cable, but that the cable was found to be beyond repair and would require complete renewal. Since then and at their request the Commissioners of Irish Lights were furnished by my Department with an estimate of the cost of providing and maintaining communication with the Tuskar Rock by means of wireless telephony—but no further intimation of their intentions in the matter has been received.
