Vol. 13 No. 9

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ENNISCORTHY COMPENSATION CLAIM.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state why compensation was refused to the relatives of Patrick Murphy, Shannon. Enniscorthy, who was shot in action at Waterford on August 2nd, 1922.

Dependent's allowance at the rate of 14/- a week was continued to be issued to Mrs. Murphy for a year and a half after her son's death, pending the assessment of compensation in her case.

Her claim was duly considered under the provisions of the Army Pensions Act, 1923. It was ascertained that she had been only partially dependent on her deceased son at the time of his death. An allowance could not, in consequence, be granted to her under the Act. A gratuity was, however, issuable in necessitous or other special cases. It was found practicable to award her the sum of £30 and this was paid last year in monthly instalments of £5.
