Vol. 14 No. 11

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - DUTY ON BREAKFAST FOODS.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that breakfast foods such as Post Toasties and Frame Food are classified by the Revenue Commissioners as confectionery on the ground that they contain about five per cent. of sweetening matter, and if he can state whether the duty on confectionery is levied on them; also, whether, in view of the facts that proprietary articles of this character are not manufactured in the Saorstát, and that the imposition of this duty tends to increase the cost of living, he will consider the desirability of exempting these articles from duty.

Post Toasties and Frame Food are both properly chargeable with Customs duty as sugar confectionery under Section 15 of the Finance Act, 1924. It is not proposed to take any steps to exempt these articles from duty.
