Vol. 14 No. 15

REDUCTION OF NATIONAL EXPENDITURE—MOTION BY DEPUTY O'MARA.

In view of the fact that the Dáil is likely to adjourn over next week, may I ask the Minister for Finance if he will be ready to take the notice standing in my name to-morrow? It would be of great assistance to him in keeping the Estimates down this year.

With reference to Deputy O'Mara's question, I understand that certain Deputies have made arrangements to go away early to-morrow, and I am sure that would disappoint Deputy O'Mara in the taking of a division that I am sure will arise in connection with his motion. In order to afford him an opportunity of appealing to the largest number of members of Dáil Eireann that it is possible to collect, I think consideration of the motion had better take place before a full House. I would not like to disappoint the Deputy in that connection, and if it meets with his approval I should say that the motion could come before the Dáil when the Estimates are under consideration. I do not think it would be possible for the Executive Council to alter the Estimates that have been printed and that will be in the hands of Deputies to-morrow. I should say that if we had had earlier intimation we would have afforded the Deputy an earlier opportunity of considering it.

Does the President really think that there will be any necessity for a division on the motion? Is there any opposition to it?

I hope to have the support of the whole House for my motion.

With regard to the intentions of the Government as to sittings, are we to sit to-morrow or next week?

I anticipate that it will be possible to take the adjournment at an earlier hour than 8.30 this evening. There are but three items on the agenda, and I propose when the business has been disposed of to move the adjournment until the 23rd inst.
