Vol. 14 No. 15

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - EJECTMENTS AGAINST TENANTS.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of ejectment orders granted against tenants in the Saorstát Courts for the past year.

To answer this question it would be necessary to circularise—

1. Officers of the High Court;

2. The twenty-seven Clerks of the Crown and Peace;

3. The Chief Clerk of the Metropolitan District Court;

4. One hundred and sixty District Court Clerks,

and all these officers would have to go over their books for the past year—a rather formidable task.

If the Deputy is satisfied that the information he seeks is worth the labour involved, I will have the necessary circulars issued and I would ask him to repeat the question in a fortnight or possibly three weeks' time.

I will repeat the query in a fortnight's time.

The Deputy is satisfied that the information he seeks is worth the labour involved?

I am satisfied, because I am aware that there are a large number of tenants being evicted from slum tenements because, owing to unemployment, they have been unable to pay the rent.

Would it not be desirable to have a return of this kind made annually to the Minister, as a matter of routine?

That is a matter of opinion. While it does not appear definitely in the Estimates, the acquiring of information of this kind involves cost, and it is always a question of one's sense of proportion whether the information is worth the cost.

May I suggest that the Deputy would be satisfied if the Minister gave him information regarding Dublin only.

I was going to suggest that the Minister should, this day fortnight, give me information regarding the Dublin area.

I will give that information.
