Vol. 14 No. 16

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TIRCONAILL AGRICULTURAL GRANT.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state what was the amount made available from the supplementary Agricultural Grant in the Appropriation Act, 1925, for the relief of agricultural rates in Tirconaill for last year; whether any reduction was made in the county rate of last year on account of this grant; whether he exercised his powers under Section 4 of the Local Government (Rates on Agricultural Land) Act, 1925, in the case of this county in directing that this grant should be applied towards meeting the possibility of rates as fixed being insufficient to meet the estimated expenditure; and, if so, whether any, or how much, of this grant has been so used; and if he will state in what other county or counties (if any) has power been exercised and this grant been so diverted, and what were the respective amounts so dealt with.

The answer to the first part of the question is £20,938. As the County Council failed to make adequate provision by means of the poor rate for defraying expenses to be incurred by them in the current financial year, I directed, in pursuance of Section 4 of the Local Government (Rates on Agricultural Land) Act, 1925, that the full amount of the supplementary grant be applied to the purpose of defraying the current expenses of the County Council. There was, therefore, no reduction in the rate struck by the Co. Council as a result of the increased Agricultural Grant. The following are the counties in which action was taken, and the figures show the amount of the grant in each case:—
