Vol. 14 No. 16

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - UNEMPLOYMENT IN CO. MEATH.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether any grants have been made to the Urban District Councils of Trim, Navan, and Kells for road improvement or relief of unemployment out of the last Vote for that purpose, and, if not, whether he will, in view of the serious unemployment existing in those centres, allocate substantial sums to the Councils mentioned for the relief of unemployment.

On the 13th of January last an application for a grant was received from the Navan Urban District Council. The appropriate forms to enable the matter to be considered were sent to the Council on the 15th of January, but they have not been returned since that date. No applications for grants were received from the Urban District Councils of Trim or Kells since the last Vote. The Deputy is, no doubt, aware, that a grant of £3,000 from the Relief Schemes Vote was made last month to the Meath County Council. I understand from the Minister for Finance that, having regard to the allocations already made from the Vote, further grants cannot now be made.
