Vol. 14 No. 18

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - BACON TARIFF.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether several conferences were held recently at the offices of his department between the heads of the various bacon-curing establishments in the Saorstát and representatives of the Ministery to consider the question of putting a tariff on imported bacon, and, if so, whether any decision has been come to on the question; also, whether any steps have been taken to consult representatives of the consumers on this proposed change.

Meetings have been held in my department at which the views of the bacon-curing industry were received as to a protective tariff on imported bacon. In such a matter no decision can be announced in anticipation of the Budget.

With regard to the last part of the Deputy's question, full consideration has been given to the probable effect on the consumer of such a proposal.
