Vol. 16 No. 3

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TOWN TENANTS BILL.

asked the President whether it is proposed to introduce a Town Tenants Bill before the Summer Recess, and, if not, whether Government time will be given if such a measure is introduced by a private Deputy.

The Parliamentary programme approved for the present session does not provide for the discussion of legislation affecting town tenants other than the Increase of Rent and Mortgage Interest (Restrictions) Bill, 1926. Having regard to the amount of business to be dealt with before the Summer Recess, I cannot undertake to give Government time for the discussion of a measure introduced by a private Deputy.

Has the Minister any intention in the near future of introducing a measure to safeguard the town tenants? Such a measure has been demanded frequently.

There is no Bill at present in course of preparation on the matter.

Could the Minister hold out any hope that there will be such a Bill? In view of the fact that the recent Rent Bill places a certain number of shopkeepers who have residences over their shops in a much worse position than they were in prior to that, will he not consider the advisability of getting them some safeguards?

A certain amount of consideration has been given to the question of setting up a committee to consider what aspects of the town tenants question do actually require legislation, and it might be possible to set up a committee that will enable legislation to be prepared at a later date.
