Vol. 16 No. 17

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - IMPORTATION OF FOREIGN BACON.

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture, if he will state what is the present position in regard to the importation of bacon and carcases from the Continent; whether he has any evidence to show that foreign bacon is being sold as Irish bacon, and whether any steps can be taken to popularise, in this country, the use of Irish bacon instead of foreign bacon.

Under the Importation of Carcases Order the importation of carcases and bacon from the Continent is prohibited. Pigs' heads and pigs' feet are, however, admitted under licence.

The Department have not received any evidence to show that foreign bacon is being sold as Irish. The merits of Irish bacon are fully known in this country, and no special steps for popularising its use appear to be called for. The consumption of foreign bacon is wholly due to its lower cost.
