Vol. 16 No. 21

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - LIMERICK ROAD SERVICES.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he intends acceding to the unanimous request of the Limerick County Council for a sworn inquiry to be held on the recent report of the Department's Chief Inspector into the administration of the road services of the eastern division of the county, and, if not, if he will state what alternative steps he intends taking on said report.

A sworn inquiry was not necessary. It would have wasted time and caused needless expense. The rectification of the matters complained of by the Chief Roads Engineer has partially taken place and I am advised some improvement is noted in the road services of the county. The contents of the report generally will continue to receive attention until satisfactory conditions are attained.

Will the Minister say whether he is aware that on the report of Chief Inspector Quigley the Limerick Co. Council asked for a sworn inquiry?

Seeing that this investigation made by the Chief Road Engineer of my Department was practically tantamount to an inquiry there is no higher authority to hold an inquiry.

Is the Minister aware that the report is practically denied by the County Surveyor, and the County Council is in this difficulty, that the report of the Chief Engineer on the administration of the eastern division of the county is denied by the County Surveyor? That is the position the Co. Council is in.

It is a matter for the County Council.

And you refuse to have an inquiry.
