Vol. 16 No. 21

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - ATHLONE MILITARY PENSION CLAIM.

SEAN O LAIDHIN

asked the Minister for Defence if he can state why a military service pension has been refused to John Geraghty, Cushla Road, Athlone, Westmeath; if he is aware that the applicant has submitted evidence from the Captain of his Irish Volunteer Company, who is at present in receipt of pension, and who vouched for the services rendered by Mr. Geraghty as an active member of the Irish Volunteers from 1917 until May, 1922, when he, Geraghty, joined the National Army, and whether this case will be reconsidered.

A Certificate of Military Service has not been awarded to Mr. John Geraghty for the reason that he did not establish to the satisfaction of the Board of Assessors that he had given the minimum amount of military service required by sub-section 4 of Section 2 of the Military Service Pensions Act, 1924. I am not aware of the evidence Mr. Geraghty furnished to the Board in support of his application under the Act. He has been notified of the conditions on which it would be possible for me to request the Board of Assessors to re-open their findings in his case, but he has not, so far, complied with those conditions.
