Vol. 16 No. 21

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - MILK PROSECUTIONS IN CORK.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that many vendors of milk in Cork city were recently prosecuted for selling milk deficient in fat from seven to as much as twenty per cent. in some cases; that in almost every case a dismiss resulted. Whether in similar prosecutions in the Dublin Borough area recently heavy fines were inflicted, and if he will state whether there is special legislation in the Dublin area providing against such abuses in the sale of milk; and, if so, whether he will introduce legislation at an early date to deal with all such abuses in the remainder of the Saorstát.

I am aware that the facts are as stated by the Deputy. There is, however, no legislation special to the Dublin area for dealing with offences in connection with the sale of milk. All prosecutions in the Saorstát for the sale of milk deficient in fats are instituted under the Sale of Food and Drugs Act, 1875 and subsequent Acts, and if amending legislation is considered necessary the Department to which representations should be made is the Department of Local Government and Public Health.
