Vol. 17 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - WEXFORD REGISTERED WORKERS.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of men, boys, women and girls who are at present registered in the Employment Exchanges at Gorey, Enniscorthy, New Ross and Wexford, respectively.

The number of men, boys, women and girls registered at the offices named in the Deputy's question on the 6th December, 1926, are as follows:—

Men

Boys

Women

Girls

Gorey

142

3

Enniscorthy

307

New Ross

84

Wexford

Does the Minister consider that conditions could be normal in Wexford in view of the great number of 830 being idle, and would he not consider the advisability of trying to do something to relieve the distress that undoubtedly prevails?

When the Deputy speaks of 830 people being idle, he must remember that 410 of them have registered as unemployed at the Deputy's own suggestion. The fact whether they are unemployed has to be ascertained.

It is not altogether at the Deputy's own suggestion, but because of the statements made by the Minister here on the occasion of the unemployment debate when he pointed out that the unemployed were not taking advantage of the Labour Exchanges.

The question of how many of the 830 are definitely unemployed on a particular day will only arise when there is any question of finding employment for them or of paying benefit.
