Vol. 18 No. 3

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - ALLEGED DELAY IN TRANSIT OF CATTLE.

asked the Minister for Lands and Agriculture if he is aware that owing to delay in transit consignments of cattle sent from stations not more than thirty or thirty-five miles distant from Dublin for sale in the Dublin Market and loaded in waggons in the forenoon, in many cases do not arrive at their destination until six or seven hours after the time of loading; and if, in view of the serious loss entailed on cattle-owners on account of the prolonged confinement of stock in waggons, he will cause representations to be made to the Railway Company with a view to expediting delivery.

It is presumed the Deputy refers to complaints made to the Great Southern Railways Company that stock despatched on the Midland Section now arrive at Liffey Bank some two hours later than formerly. This complaint is being investigated by the Company with a view to any practicable and necessary acceleration of the service. Generally speaking, matters of this kind are largely in the hands of cattle traders and local stock owners. Recently at the request of a deputation the Nenagh service in connection with the Dublin Market has been adjusted, and in addition it has been arranged to resume the special live stock train from Bagenalstown which was discontinued for some time owing to a falling off in the traffic.
