Vol. 18 No. 8

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - PROPOSED CURING STATION AT BANTRY.

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether he has now fully considered the proposal to erect a curing station or kippering house in Bantry, County Cork, and if so, with what result.

Efforts were made by my Department last autumn to induce fish curers to take up herring curing in Bantry. All the curers in West Cork were approached and a report on the class of herring being landed was circulated amongst them. I regret that these curers did not see fit to take on curing at Bantry.

As to kippering, the Department have endeavoured to arouse the interest of local merchants engaged in the fish trade in the direction of opening a kipper house, but so far without result.
