CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - RIVER FERGUS DRAINAGE EXPENSES.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) the amount expended as at 31st December, 1926, under the Drainage Maintenance Act, 1924, on the River Fergus; (b) the amount spent in each of the months of September, October and November, 1926; (c) the sum expended in each of the above months on supervision (outdoor) and the number of professional persons engaged thereon; (d) the sum required for travelling expenses in connection therewith; and (e) whether the work will be completed at the scheduled time and scheduled price and specification (other than modifications thereof) as determined at the inauguration of the scheme.

Restoration works under the Drainage Maintenance Act, 1924, were commenced in the Fergus Drainage District in the summer of 1925, and (a) the total amount expended up to the 31st December, 1926, was £16,552 14s. 9d.; (b) the amounts spent in each of the months, September, October and November, 1926, were as follows:—

(c) The sums expended in each of the above months on supervision (outdoor) and included in (a) and (b) above were as follows:—

representing part of the time of one professional officer; (d) the sum required for travelling expenses, also included in figures at (a) and (b), was as follows:—

(e) The original estimate for the restoration of the district was £15,000. It is now estimated that the total expenditure on the district will be about £18,300.

There was no specified time for the completion of the works, but it is anticipated that the restoration scheme will be finished during the coming summer.

Is the Minister able to say what saving will accrue to the Exchequer through the cutting of the wages of workmen on the scheme by 1/- per week?

The Deputy will have to put down another question touching on that matter.
