Vol. 19 No. 9

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - INCOME TAX ASSESSMENTS IN SAORSTAT.

asked the Minister for Finance if he could state the number of persons resident in the area now composing Saorstát Eireann who were assessed for income tax purposes as having incomes of over £3,000 per annum in the financial years 1909-1910, 1913-1914, 1918-1919, 1921-1922, 1923-1924 and 1926-1927 respectively.

The number of persons resident in the Saorstát assessed to super-tax in respect of incomes exceeding £3,000 is: — 1923-1924, 611; 1926-1927, 526. Assessments may still be made for both 1923-1924 and 1926-1927, and some increase in these figures, especially for the latter year, is probable. The figures for years 1909-1910, 1913-1914, 1918-1919 and 1921-1922 are not available.

Is there any possible means of estimating the earlier figures?

I do not think so. There was no separate record of any sort for the Saorstát.

Could they be estimated by counties?

I do not think so.

Or by districts?

Will the Minister look into the matter?

I am afraid the figures cannot be got, but I will look into the matter.
