Vol. 19 No. 12

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - HANDLING OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCE.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that many complaints have been made of the methods of handling perishable agricultural produce such as eggs by his Department, and that it is stated that those articles often reach the consignee in a smashed condition; whether he will make inquiries as to the cause of this happening, and will take steps to have the grievance in this regard remedied. further, whether he will state what are the present arrangements for compensation in regard to damage to parcels during transit.

No reports have reached me which would indicate that the number of complaints of damage to parcels containing eggs or other agricultural produce is abnormal. Eggs sent through the post are exceptionally liable to damage, and every effort is made to ensure that parcels containing them are properly treated. The principal cause of damage is imperfect packing, and with a view to removing this cause as far as possible notices have been circulated through the Press advising the public of the best method of packing. The use of a wooden or other rigid box with suitable partitions and with a well-fitting lid is particularly recommended. In view of the fragile nature of the contents it is not proposed to sanction any departure from the published regulations under which compensation is not paid for damage to parcels containing eggs.
