Vol. 19 No. 12

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - TOTALISATOR BETTING SCHEME.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he has granted any licence under Section 24 (1) of the Betting Act, 1926, to set up, maintain, and work a totalisator; and, if he has not granted any such licence, whether he has come to a decision as to what body is suitable to be so licensed.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. It is the intention of the Government to grant a licence to some association or body representing racing interests. If no such association or body can be found to take over the working of the totalisator on satisfactory conditions consideration will then be given to the question of having the scheme worked directly by the Revenue Commissioners. At the moment negotiations are proceeding with the Turf Club and the National Hunt Steeplechase Committee, but so far there is no definite decision.
