Vol. 19 No. 12

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - KILMALLOCK WORKHOUSE.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state what was the total amount of the award given by the British Government to the Limerick County Council in connection with the taking over of the Kilmallock workhouse in 1920, and the consequent expense incurred by the County Council in getting the transferred inmates looked after in Mallow; also, what were the amounts each official of the Mallow Union received, and if any officials received more than the amount claimed, and, if so, who are those officials?

A sum of £1,362 18s. 7d. was received from the British military authorities in respect of excess expenditure incurred as a result of the occupation of Kilmallock Workhouse by military forces. The amount was paid to the Limerick County Council in January, 1924, as the successors of the Kilmallock Board of Guardians. That sum included £808 19s. 7d. in respect of additional remuneration payable to officers and servants of the Mallow Union to which the Kilmallock inmates were transferred. The allocation of the remuneration paid to officers and servants for extra duties was left in the hands of the Commissioner administering the North Cork County Board of Health as it was felt that being fully acquainted with all the circumstances he was the best judge of the value of the extra work devolving on the different officers. I am not aware that any official received more than the amount claimed. A sum of £375 was also paid to the county council in connection with a claim for structural damage to Kilmallock Workhouse premises.
