Vol. 19 No. 21

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - WELFARE OF THE BLIND.

TOMAS MAC EOIN

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is prepared to set up a committee representative of blind persons to advise him in the consideration of schemes for the welfare of the blind submitted to him by local authorities under the Blind Persons Act, 1920, and otherwise to assist in the consideration of matters affecting the blind.

I am prepared to give the fullest possible consideration to any views held by representatives of blind persons. As I am adequately advised as to all essential matters relating to schemes for the welfare of the blind, it is not my view that a committee of the nature proposed would be of assistance.

Has the Minister had any direct representations from blind persons as to the evils from which they suffer, or the grievances that they allege against the administration of the law relating to the blind?

No. I had no specific representations of that kind made.

I take it that before one can understand anything about blind persons' grievances one should hear from the blind themselves Am I to take it that the Minister has not had such representations from the blind, or called into conference blind persons?

No, but we are ready to give the fullest consideration to any such representations made at any time.
