Vol. 19 No. 24

PRIVATE BUSINESS. - THE ADJOURNMENT.

I move that the Dáil adjourn until Friday next, at 5 o'clock.

Is the President going to make any announcement in reply to Deputy Gorey's request?

The business will be the consideration of Bills from the Seanad.

Is the President proposing to sit late on Friday?

I cannot say that until I see the business that we will have to consider, but I am moving to meet on Friday in the event of amendments coming from the Seanad which would require consideration. If necessary we will sit on Saturday and on the following Monday. I am hoping to be able to dissolve on Monday, the 23rd inst.

Is it proposed to give any opportunity for the discussion of the report of the Public Accounts Committee, and if it is not convenient to give such an opportunity now, will an opportunity be given early in the new Dáil, assuming that any of the members of the Public Accounts Committee survive? I cannot ask the President to pledge the next Government, but if he should be in the position of responsibility, will he give that opportunity?

I should be disposed to consider that most favourably if I am.

I should like to put a question which might be considered between now and next week, if it has not already been considered. I raised it early to-day in respect of a Private Bill. We are assuming in respect to the Currency Bill and the Dentists Bill that the first session of a new Parliament will be in the same relation to the last session of an expiring Parliament as one session of a Parliament is in relation to a previous session of that Parliament. I think it is a very doubtful assumption that we can carry over Bills and take them as having been already considered up to a point, say, the Second Stage or the Final Stage, in the Dáil, and let the new Parliament resume discussion at the stage that they had reached in the previous Parliament.

It is in the Constitution in respect to a new session.

I think it means another session of the same Parliament and that it does not apply to new Parliaments.

I will look into that matter.

Is the Dentists Bill to be proceeded with further?

It was understood that it was not to go any further at present.

Motion put and agreed to.
The Dáil adjourned at 2.40 p.m. until 5 p.m. on Friday, May 20th.
