Vol. 19 No. 25

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE ACT RESEARCH FUND.

TOMAS MAC EOIN

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the present position in regard to the share of Saorstát Eireann in the Research Fund created under Section 16 (2) of the National Health Insurance Act, 1911.

The Ministry of Health Act, 1919, repealed the proviso to Section 16 (2) of the National Insurance Act, 1911, relating to medical research so far as Great Britain was concerned, and, since the coming into operation of that Act, no funds for research in connection with the Insurance Acts have been provided either in this country or in Great Britain.

Does the Minister not think it would be very useful to provide research, especially in connection with tuberculosis cases?

It is understood that the question of future arrangements for research was dealt with by the recent commission of inquiry, and they have made a recommendation on the matter for which legislation will be necessary.
