Vol. 20 No. 6

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - PENSIONS FOR SECONDARY TEACHERS.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is yet in a position to make a statement with regard to the settlement of a scheme of pensions for secondary teachers, and, if not, whether he will be able to make such a statement before the recess.

Discussions have taken place with the Actuary, who has been requested to submit the tentative scheme drawn up by the Minister for Education to a thorough investigation. The Actuary is now actively engaged upon the examination of that scheme in the light of such information as could be furnished by the education authorities as to the numbers and conditions of service of secondary teachers in the past and the probable effects of the improved conditions by which they have recently benefited. The Deputy will readily understand that a pension scheme which is intended to cover a class with such varied conditions of service as the secondary teachers must be examined at the outset with the greatest care. I do not anticipate that I shall be in a position to make a definite statement before the recess.

Could the Minister tell me whether the actuarial investigation covers the cases of pensions in connection with training college teachers as well as pensions for secondary teachers?

I think it deals only with secondary teachers.
