Vol. 20 No. 7

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - WIDOWS AND DEPENDENTS.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of widows with dependent children in the Free State as shown by the Census Statistics of April, 1926.

As I stated in the recent discussion on the estimates of my Department, the results of the Census of Population, taken in 1926, are not yet available. Dependency is a separate subject which will be dealt with in a separate volume when the final results are published, but that volume will not be ready for issue until next year.

Can the Minister say whether it is the intention of the Government to introduce legislation in respect of widows with dependent children? Will they set up a contributory insurance scheme?

That is a matter that might be considered after the dependency statistics have been obtained.
