Vol. 20 No. 13

WRITTEN ANSWERS. - THE KELP INDUSTRY IN THE GAELTACHT.

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether he has had under his consideration the present state of the kelp industry; and whether he is in a position to state what steps are being taken to restore an industry which is of special interest to many parts of the Gaeltacht.

Mr. LYNCH

A conference between the Ministers for Finance and Industry and Commerce and myself is being arranged to consider certain steps having for their object the improvement of the kelp industry. This conference had to be put off owing to recent tragic events, but it will, I expect, take place shortly. The proposals to be considered include control by the Government of the kelp output and setting up a factory in the Saorstát where iodine and other products will be extracted.
