Vol. 20 No. 16

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - LOUGH DERG LEVEL.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that a statement has been made current in parts of County Galway that as a result of the Shannon scheme the level of Lough Derg will be maintained at 117 feet, and that as a consequence there is fear of widespread flooding, and whether he will make a statement of the exact position with a view to dispelling such fears.

The level of Lough Derg, under the development of the Shannon now being carried out, will not at any time exceed 110 feet and there is no cause whatever for any years of flooding. No decision as to the level necessary in the event of a further development will be taken in advance of such development, when the responsible engineers may be trusted not to give any ground for panic.
