Vol. 20 No. 17

CEISTEANNA—QUESTIONS. ORAL ANSWERS. - THE HAZELWOOD ESTATE (SLIGO).

asked the Minister for Fisheries whether it is a fact that since the Hazelwood Estate, Sligo, became the property of the Irish Land Commission the timber thereon has been sold to a Scotch firm, and, if so, whether the Minister will take steps to ensure that bushes adjoining, and adding to the artistic beauty of Lough Gill, will not be interfered with, and whether as regards the others the Minister has made or purposes making it a condition of sale that for every tree cut one should be planted, and so afford much-wanted employment, in addition to preserving the beauty of the district.

In connection with the sale of the Estate of Owen Wynn, Co. Sligo, by the owner direct to the tenants under the Irish Land Act, 1903, the owner repurchased the demesne of Hazelwood by means of an advance made on 17th March, 1906, under Section 3 of the Act. The Land Commission have been in negotiation for the acquisition of a part of the lands of Hazelwood, which do not adjoin Lough Gill, and untenanted lands on the estate, but these lands have not yet been acquired by the Land Commission. They have no knowledge of the alleged cutting of timber.

Would the Secretary see that no more timber is cut in that portion of the land?

That is really a matter for the Minister for Agriculture.
